Golden Ticket Toy Drive

Golden Ticket Toy Drivede Vere’s Irish Pub, Mikuni Japanese Restaurant & Bar, and DeMarcus Cousins have joined charitable forces this holiday season to create the first Golden Ticket Toy Drive—an effort to help local kids in need and reward donors for their generosity!

From November 29 to December 9, all Mikuni and de Vere’s restaurants will be accepting donations of new toys and personal items for the Kylee Lillich Charitable Giving Tree, a non-profit 501c3, all-volunteer local charity that helps children year-round. In return for the charitable gesture, everyone who donates will be given an envelope, which may contain a golden ticket good for amazing prizes!

On December 10, all lucky golden ticket holders will present their ticket at Mikuni Midtown to retrieve one of several prizes, awarded by Mikuni founder Taro Arai (the Willy Wonka of sushi). There will also be a kick-off event at de Vere’s Irish Pub in Sacramento on November 26 from 2-3pm. NBA star and Golden Ticket Toy Drive supporter DeMarcus Cousins will be at both events to promote the cause.

Those who cannot make a toy or item donation, but would still like to contribute, can make a cash donation at www.goldenticketca.com. (No golden ticket entry for online donations.)

Thanks to the Kylee Lillich Charitable Giving Tree, all donations will go to children who are homeless, hospitalized, grieving the loss of a parent, brother, or sister, or simply in need of basic items. In its 11th year, the local charity makes wishes come true for nearly 700 grieving, needy, and hospitalized children each year.

Spotlight: de Vere's Craft Beer Program

19740_1332869039132_7204357_nMeet Jayme Hansen, the man behind de Vere's craft beer program. He's in charge of selecting and acquiring the amazing and unique brews we have rotating on tap in the back bar. He also knows a LOT about beer. Here, Jayme reveals his favorite craft beers, how his passion started, and more. Drink up the knowledge!

-When you're selecting craft beers, what do you look for?
There are many factors including the seasons, availability, and how approachable they are.  Sometimes they're obscure, sometimes they're from around the corner. The most important part is being able to talk about it, and get people excited to try things you've never had before.

-What was the inspiration for starting the craft beer program at the pub?
It was simple: We wanted to further our ability to share our passion for great ales and lagers.

-Where are the craft beer taps located, and how many do you have going at a time?
The bulk of the taps are at the back bar underneath our whiskey wall.  We have six rotating handles back there and five on our main tap system.

-What are some of your favorite craft beer events that you've helped put on at the pub?
Last year we got a special keg of Firestone Walker's Anniversary Ale and Chef prepared a Foie Gras Burger to accompany the beer.  THAT was amazing.

-What craft beer events are you looking forward to?
We are working on some bourbon and beer pairings for National Bourbon Month in September.

craft beer board-How did you get into beer and where does your passion for beer come from?
Once I started waiting tables, I quickly learned I would need to know what I was talking about, whether it be food or drink. So I started taking home a different 22oz or 6 pack every day after work. Slowly but surely I knew BevMo's inventory as well as the employees. I started homebrewing beer shortly after that, and it's been a going strong ever since. It has turned into one of those things I cannot stop learning about.

-What are some of your all-time favorite beers?
Allagash - Curieux, it's a Belgian style Tripel aged in Jim Beam Barrels. Every time I have it I am amazed.

-What are your favorite craft beers for summertime consumption?
Always an evolving answer, but currently I would say Firestone Walker Pivo Pils, Anderson Valley Cerveza Crema, and almost any Mexican Lager.

-What are your top 3 favorite places for craft beer in Sacramento?
Pangaea, The Shack, and believe it or not Tower Liquor on Broadway, they get crazy good stuff under the radar!

Firestone Walker Beer Dinner, a four-course dinner featuring:
-Firestone Walker Pivo Pils, 5.3%: Pils is a bright straw colored lager beer with playful carbonation topped with beautiful white foam lace. Delicate lightly toasted malt flavors underscore noble German hop character. Hallertau-grown Magnum hops deliver the lupilin foundation while generous amounts of Spalter Select hops bring floral aromatic and spicy herbal notes. As a twist on the traditional Pils, they dry hop with German Saphir for a touch of bergamot zest and lemon grass. A refreshing, light bodied and hop driven Pils.

-Firestone Walker Double Jack Imperial IPA, 9.5%: The brewery's first Imperial IPA, it features a big malty middle to cloak the high alcohol and mouth puckering hop bitterness. Huge tangerine, grapefruit and juicy fruit aroma blossom over the herbal blue basil and malt earthiness of this aggressive beer.

-Firestone Walker Wookey Jack - Black Rye IPA, 8.3%: Rich dark malts and spicy rye careen into bold citrus laden hops creating a new dimension in IPA flavor. This brew has been left unfiltered and unfined to retain all of its texture and character. At 80IBU's, Wookey Jack is gnarly on the outside yet complex and refined on the inside.

-Firestone Walker Sucuba Barleywine, 13.0%: Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry.

Black as night, this high-gravity, malty brew offers intense but well-balanced flavors and aroma, with hints of dark chocolate and roasted coffee.

Next Up...

-Drakes Barrel Aged Drakonic, 8.75%: Their monster Drakonic Imperial Stout was sent to mellow in a variety of their bourbon barrels back in 2009.  There it took in flavors of vanilla, oak, smoke, and hints of fruit into its smooth darkness.  This is a blend from several of those barrels with notes of chocolate, bourbon and subtle hints of dark, rich fruit.

-Allagash Black Belgian Stout, 7.5%: Allagash Black is a Belgian style stout. The silky mouth feel is a great balance to the roasted character, coffee and dark chocolate notes expressed throughout this beer.

-Troubadour Obscura Stout, 8.2%: Troubadour Obscura is a dark red-brown colored beer, with a rich, malty body combined with different touches of a stout but in a very nice balanced way: roast, chocolate, coffee, vanilla. A mild stout with a Belgian body.

-Lagunitas Imperial Stout, 9.9%: Made with Highly roasted malted barley, and plenty of it, to give the beer an uncommon richness and smoky, roasty depth. Just the way the 18th century Russian royalty liked it.
