5 Things You Didn't Know About Whiskey (and Sacramento)

Whiskey & Sacramento

1) The history of whiskey in Ireland dates to around the 12th century when Irish monks brought the practice of distilling spirits back to their homeland from travels abroad. The meaning of its name (Water of Life) hints to its cultural importance, and indeed it has been both the cause of and solution to many an Irishman’s problems.

2) There are currently twelve licensed distilleries throughout Ireland which produce some of the most respected and famous whiskey brands: Connemara, Michael Collins, Jamesons, Powers, Old Bushmills, Tullamore Dew among others – all of which are available at de Vere’s.

3) When the de Vere White family opened our pub we knew that in order for it to be a proper Irish establishment, we had to take our whiskey collection seriously. That's why we pour whiskey from all over the world, including rare and allocated brands that are difficult to find elsewhere. In fact, de Vere's has the largest selection of whiskey in the greater Sacramento area.

4) de Vere's offers whiskey tastings through our vendors, where you can learn all about the individual distilling processes for the whiskeys we carry. We announce these on social media and through email to members of our Whiskey Society.

5) If you’re looking for the best place in Sacramento to bring a whiskey connoisseur, de Vere’s is the place.

We look forward to seeing you in the pub.

Sacramento Beer Week Firestone Walker Rare Beer Event

Sacramento Beer Week Firestone Walker Rare Beer Event

Thursday, February 27

de Vere's Irish Pub Sacramento

We will be featuring three of the rarest beers available outside of the Firestone Walker—and will be welcoming one of the brewers, Jeffers, to the pub for the event! For $30, you will receive a 6-oz Firestone Walker tulip glass and a punch card that gives you access to all three beers. You can enjoy the beers in any order you like and take your glass home as a gift.

The featured Firestone Walker beers are:

Sucaba Barrel Aged Barley Wine 13.0%

A true English Barley wine.  Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combine with soft chocolate malt undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, toasted coconut, and a touch of dark cherry.

our_beers_PARABOLA 2013

Parabola Barrel Aged Russian Imperial Stout 13.0%

Bold bourbon, tobacco, and espresso aromas and a hint of American oak greet the nose. Rich, chewy roasted malts, charred oak, and bourbon-like vanilla fill the palate and create a seamless finish.

The third beer in our lineup will be kept as a surprise until we get closer to Beer Week. Normally, this beer doesn't leave the brewery and will have the only keg in Sacramento!

St. Baldrick's Day 2014

St. Baldrick's Day is coming!

How much money would it take to shave your head? What if all that money went to making a difference in the lives of children battling cancer? That’s what St. Baldrick’s Day is all about—going bald for a good cause.

Every year, we gather the community for a one-day event that brings together teams of people willing to shave their heads bald as a sign of solidarity with children who are fighting cancer. All participants, which include local businesses, schools, politicians, de Vere’s patrons, and even plenty of women, raise money in support of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, then congregate at de Vere’s Irish Pub (Midtown Sacramento and Davis) to shave their heads. And yes, we’re talkin’ buzzed bald!

To sign up or donate, go to www.getbald.com.

Davis St. Baldrick's Day: March 8, 2:30-5pm

Sacramento St. Baldrick's Day: March 10, 5:30-8:30pm

We love parties (and Ireland) so much, we always celebrate the New Year TWICE--once on Dublin time (4pm PST) and again on local time (12am PST)! We've been doing this double celebration since we opened, first because it's just a great excuse to toast the ones we love and second, to give our pub family options. If you have children, want to avoid crazy New Year's Eve crowds, and/or prefer to be in bed at midnight, we invite you to join us for the Dublin toast at 4pm. If you want to get dressed up and hit the town at night, join us for our midnight countdown!

We will be offering complimentary champagne or whiskey toasts for BOTH celebrations!

Did we mention there is NO COVER all day/night?

We'll be raising our glasses to our wonderful patrons and cheers-ing to a healthy, prosperous and very happy New Year!
