Spotlight: de Vere's Craft Beer Program

19740_1332869039132_7204357_nMeet Jayme Hansen, the man behind de Vere's craft beer program. He's in charge of selecting and acquiring the amazing and unique brews we have rotating on tap in the back bar. He also knows a LOT about beer. Here, Jayme reveals his favorite craft beers, how his passion started, and more. Drink up the knowledge!

-When you're selecting craft beers, what do you look for?
There are many factors including the seasons, availability, and how approachable they are.  Sometimes they're obscure, sometimes they're from around the corner. The most important part is being able to talk about it, and get people excited to try things you've never had before.

-What was the inspiration for starting the craft beer program at the pub?
It was simple: We wanted to further our ability to share our passion for great ales and lagers.

-Where are the craft beer taps located, and how many do you have going at a time?
The bulk of the taps are at the back bar underneath our whiskey wall.  We have six rotating handles back there and five on our main tap system.

-What are some of your favorite craft beer events that you've helped put on at the pub?
Last year we got a special keg of Firestone Walker's Anniversary Ale and Chef prepared a Foie Gras Burger to accompany the beer.  THAT was amazing.

-What craft beer events are you looking forward to?
We are working on some bourbon and beer pairings for National Bourbon Month in September.

craft beer board-How did you get into beer and where does your passion for beer come from?
Once I started waiting tables, I quickly learned I would need to know what I was talking about, whether it be food or drink. So I started taking home a different 22oz or 6 pack every day after work. Slowly but surely I knew BevMo's inventory as well as the employees. I started homebrewing beer shortly after that, and it's been a going strong ever since. It has turned into one of those things I cannot stop learning about.

-What are some of your all-time favorite beers?
Allagash - Curieux, it's a Belgian style Tripel aged in Jim Beam Barrels. Every time I have it I am amazed.

-What are your favorite craft beers for summertime consumption?
Always an evolving answer, but currently I would say Firestone Walker Pivo Pils, Anderson Valley Cerveza Crema, and almost any Mexican Lager.

-What are your top 3 favorite places for craft beer in Sacramento?
Pangaea, The Shack, and believe it or not Tower Liquor on Broadway, they get crazy good stuff under the radar!

-Firestone Walker Double Jack Imperial IPA, 9.5%: The brewery's first Imperial IPA, it features a big malty middle to cloak the high alcohol and mouth puckering hop bitterness. A Pint-Filled Proposal at de Vere's!

We've seen a lot happen at our pub, but this is a first. Last week, we were actually the site for a wedding proposal! We caught up with Josh, the groom to be, to get the back story on his engagement to Carole, his girlfriend of almost three years. Here's how it all went down...

"Carole and my adventure started March 21st, 2009. I was in Sacramento visiting family while I was in the Army stationed at Ft. Lewis, WA. Carole was in town from her graduate program at Portland State University. We (my brothers) wanted to go to this new Irish pub downtown that just opened up. While we were there my oldest brother knew a girl in Carole’s party from a local sports camp here and so both groups joined up into one large party for the rest of the night.

"The reason why I wanted to propose at de Vere’s was that it was where we met. I wanted to make it special and I felt that it was just right to do it there. I tried to think of other places too but none of them could compare with the place we met. I really wanted to use the pint glasses for a few reasons. Carole really wanted to have a few of the de Vere’s pint glasses for the whole sentimental aspect of that was where we met and also I felt so nervous about actually getting the words out that it would be a little easier for me to ask her with the help of a inanimate object.

"I should also state that I chose the date Feb 18th because her birthday is the 21st. So I was able to set this all up with the ruse that we were celebrating her birthday. My plan was to have the glasses hidden from her until all of my brothers were there and each one would have a glass with the words “Will You Marry Me?” printed on them. On my cue, each brother in the right order would put the glass down in front of her where she could read it. After all were set I would present her with the last glass saying “me?” and be holding her ring waiting for her answer. But in true brotherly fashion things got a little confused. We held a quick birthday toast and then the glasses were supposed to be placed in front of her but my brother with the glass “Will” yelled out “Carole! Will,” which took all of us by surprise. The next brother was so confused that easily 15-20 seconds passed before he showed her “You.” The next brother placed the glass “Marry” in front of her then I rotated mine—“Me?”. I pulled the ring out of my pocket and she stared at me for a few more seconds before yelling “Umm, YES!” While I must admit it really didn’t go as I may have planned, the last minute change worked out fantastically.

"Still, this wouldn’t have been possible without the awesome help from Henry, Jamie, Lauren and the rest of the de Vere’s staff."

Congratulations and CHEERS to Josh and Carole! We're so honored to have been a part of your special day...and look forward to hosting you for engagement photos!

Starting Friday Feb 22nd...

-Mad River Anniversary Rorschach Chocolate Oatmeal Stout, 7.45%: Dark brown. Nice chocolate and cereal aroma. Deep roasty chocolate taste with nice burnt coffee notes to the finish.

-Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout, 9.2%: Deep, opaque brown with a beautiful tan head that lasts. Coffee, roasted nuts, roasted malts, dark/bitter chocolate notes. hoppy finish. Good carbonation, bitterness lingers.

-Shipyard Blue Fin Irish Stout, 4.7%: Initial malt and caramel flavor with a dry roasted finish. Full bodied yet smooth.

-Uinta Crooked Line – Labyrinth Double Stout, 13.2%: Enter the Labyrinth, a multi-dimensional black ale. Discover the complex intermingling of black licorice and toasted oak. Seek the subtle hints of bittersweet chocolate. Explore pairing Labyrinth with flavorful cheeses and rich desserts.

-Anchor Steam Zymaster Flying Cloud Stout, 7.4%: Zymaster® Series No. 3 is a dry, Irish-style export stout akin to those brewed in the 1800s for the long voyage to San Francisco. Black as night, this high-gravity, malty brew offers intense but well-balanced flavors and aroma, with hints of dark chocolate and roasted coffee.

Next Up...

-Drakes Barrel Aged Drakonic, 8.75%: Their monster Drakonic Imperial Stout was sent to mellow in a variety of their bourbon barrels back in 2009.  There it took in flavors of vanilla, oak, smoke, and hints of fruit into its smooth darkness.  This is a blend from several of those barrels with notes of chocolate, bourbon and subtle hints of dark, rich fruit.

-Allagash Black Belgian Stout, 7.5%: Allagash Black is a Belgian style stout. The silky mouth feel is a great balance to the roasted character, coffee and dark chocolate notes expressed throughout this beer.

-Troubadour Obscura Stout, 8.2%: Troubadour Obscura is a dark red-brown colored beer, with a rich, malty body combined with different touches of a stout but in a very nice balanced way: roast, chocolate, coffee, vanilla. A mild stout with a Belgian body.

-Lagunitas Imperial Stout, 9.9%: Made with Highly roasted malted barley, and plenty of it, to give the beer an uncommon richness and smoky, roasty depth. Just the way the 18th century Russian royalty liked it.
